Jockey switch as Jumbo steps up

RACING: Trainer Michael Nolan is hoping a key jockey change can provide Jumbo Prince with a welcome edge when he looks to continue pushing his Queensland Winter Carnival claims today.

Ace Sydney hoop Blake Shinn will be the new rider for Jumbo’s Prince when he tackles the $125,000 Group Three Premier’s Cup over 2200 metres.

Shine replaces Luke Tarrant who steered the five-year-old to a dead-heat victory in last month’s Weetwood Handicap (1200m) and was aboard the gelding at his latest third in the Singapore TC Members Handicap (1600m).

“We explained to Luke’s manager he has done nothing wrong on the horse,” Nolan said.

“But when you get to these bigger races you want to get the best available riders to help give you every edge possible.

“Blake’s a heavier rider who’s ridden Jumbo once before and we are pleased to be able to get him again.”

Jumbo Prince faces a quick step in distance from 1600 to 2000 metres today as connections hope to get a guide on his progress to either the Brisbane or Ipswich Cup.

“We’ve got our work cut out,” Nolan said.

“Jumping to 2200 metres itself is a big step and he has to do it with 57.5kg against quality opposition.

“But my biggest concern is how he will handle the Eagle Farm track the way it is at present.

“It’s a heavy 8 after no rain and the way it has been playing it’s an unknown factor. for all horses

“We’re just hoping Jumbo gets through it okay.

“We’re looking for a good runs from him that will give us a guide on whether to move on to the Brisbane Cup or Ipswich Cup.”
