Tributes for a city icon

STALWART of the Toowoomba business community, Treg Rowe, has been remembered as an icon.

Tributes flowed from civic and business leaders, who paid tribute to Mr Rowe’s lifetime of achievemen­ts.

Toowoomba Mayor Paul Antonio said Mr Rowe’s contributi­on to the city was “enormous”.

“We have lost a community icon who gave a lot to this city,” he said.

“He was a humble man who did not seek gratitude for what he did for the community.”

Toowoomba Chamber of Commerce president Joy Mingay described Mr Rowe as an “iconic Toowoomba businessma­n” and “stalwart of the business community”.

“He’s been a part of the community for a long time,” she said.

“He has contribute­d a lot and will be sadly missed.”

Toowoomba and Surat Basin Enterprise executive chairman Shane Charles said he did not know Mr Rowe personally, however knew of his contributi­on to Toowoomba.

“I know him in terms of his legend,” he said.

“(His death) is a big loss and my thoughts are with his family.”

Prominent Toowoomba developer Barry Bernoth said he had great respect for Mr Rowe and described him as a gentleman.

“He was a man of solid stature and didn’t seek out publicity (for what he did),” he said.

“He was a man behind the scenes who got a lot of things done.”

Philanthro­pist Clive Berghofer offered his condolence­s to the family and said Mr Rowe was a “great man”.
