We can target that and go after them. — Glenn Maxwell Maxwell to target Bangladesh

-

CRICKET: Glenn Maxwell says Australia can target Bangladesh’s bowling attack in its must-win Champions Trophy clash at The Oval tonight (10.30pm AEST).

After Friday’s washout against New Zealand, Steve Smith’s team needs to defeat the Tigers.

A loss would leave the Aussies needing to beat England next Saturday and hope other results go their way if they are to reach the semi-finals.

Bangladesh posted a decent score of 6-305 in the tournament opener on Thursday but could not contain Alex Hales, Eoin Morgan and Joe Root as England chased down the target with eight wickets intact and more than an over to spare.

Maxwell said Australia could get some joy against Bangladesh’s bowlers.

“I think they batted quite well against England,” he said. “The biggest thing for them was because the wicket was so good they struggled to make inroads into England’s batting line-up.

“That is something we can maybe target.

“They haven’t got a big 145(kph)-plus bowler or a trick spinner that some of the other teams maybe do and we can target that and go after them.”

Smith slammed his seam attack after the performance against the Kiwis, but did not give Maxwell a chance with his part-time off-spin, instead turning to Travis Head.

Maxwell said he was unconcerned about not getting a bowl but would relish the chance if it came.

Bangladesh has lost 18 of the 19 meetings between the nations since 1990.
