Rangers romp to huge Risdon Cup triumph

RUGBY UNION: It isn’t very often that a team in the Risdon Cup comes close to racking up 100 points in a single game.

A blue moon almost rose on the weekend as Rangers ran out 95-3 winners over Highfields.

The massive win could easily have been mistaken for that of a cricket match as Rangers pulled off one of the competition’s biggest wins in a highlight-reel worthy performance.

Risdon Cup debutants Highfields were on the receiving end of a brutal scoreline that even had the opposition’s coach offering sympathy.

“Poor old Highfields,” Rangers coach Sam Hannant said.

“They are struggling a bit with numbers and had a few blokes who have never even played rugby before.”

Despite the flattering scoreline Hannant is not feeling overly confident about Rangers’ run of games in the next month.

His side takes on leaders Goondiwindi, USQ and premiers Dalby when they return from next weekend’s bye.

“Apart from Gundy we have only lost by two points to USQ and they are definitely in the hunt,” Hannant said.

“They are definitely in the running but it is about who finishes stronger.”

After almost notching a century of points on the weekend with a team still missing some of its key players, Rangers have now given their coach a few selection dilemmas for when his first choice players return to full fitness.

“We had eight or nine of our regular players out so that was pleasing and it will do us well come the end of the season,” Hannant said.

“It certainly will create for some selection headaches.”
