WAGNERS is among several Darling Downs companies ready to pounce on contracts to help build the upcoming Adani mine, which could be worth tens of millions of dollars to the region.

The massive Carmichael coal mine in the Galilee Basin received full commitment from its owners to proceed, with state and federal ministers flooding into Townsville on Tuesday to spruik the $16.5 billion project and the company’s “final investment decision” on it.

While a full costings analysis for the first stage of the mine hasn’t been completed, Wagners, Ostwald Bros and FKG were all in talks with the company about different tenders.

Wagners chairman Denis Wagner said he was confident the construction materials company would play a role in the project.

“Our situation is we’re talking to them about some opportunities – we’re confident of being able to be successful about the things we’re talking about with them,” he said.

“We see it as a big driver for Toowoomba and I think it will be huge and really good for this region.

“There will be opportunities in all sectors.”

Dalby-based Ostwald Bros CEO Brendan Ostwald said his company was also negotiating with Adani over the Carmichael coal mine.

Plenty of questions still remain over the mine, such as where Adani will find another $3.3 billion to fund stage one.

Queensland Resources Council CEO Ian Macfarlane said the project’s value to the Toowoomba economy could run into “the hundreds of millions”.

“I’m confident with the level of expertise, there will be local jobs in firms here that supply into Adani,” he said.
