TRC spruces up lookout
Upgrades at Mt Kynoch Lookout
ONE of Toowoomba’s favourite lookouts has closed while it undergoes upgrades as part of the Queensland Government’s $3.2 million scenic lookout program.
The popular Mt Kynoch Lookout off the New England Hwy will receive an upgrade to improve safety, parking and amenities for visitors.
Main Roads and Road Safety Minister Mark Bailey said the upgrade program aimed to spruce up scenic lookouts throughout the state.
“We established the Scenic Lookout Upgrade Program to help local councils revitalise existing lookouts across Queensland,” he said.
“Lookouts on roads will be funded on a 50:50 basis in partnership with local councils, with upgrades on state roads receiving 100% state funding.
“This program is about encouraging tourists and residents to stop and take in our spectacular scenery in regional areas.”
Toowoomba Regional Council’s Deputy Mayor Carol Taylor said the project would involve the construction of a new road and parking bays, including a disabled shared zone.
“New picnic settings and a shelter will be installed and fences will be erected around the edge of the lookout to improve the safety of pedestrians,” she said.
“The lookout, which has long been an attraction for both visitors and local residents, offers sweeping views across the Lockyer Valley and the eastern edge of Toowoomba.”
Cr Taylor said construction of the site would be completed by the end of June, weather permitting.
For safety reasons there will be no public access to the lookout during the construction.
Signs are in place to advise motorists of the temporary change to lookout access.
