Darling Downs saved its best performance of the season until last as the Panthers’ State Netball League division two city campaign ended in heartbreaking yet thrilling fashion.

The Panthers took on Golden South Jaguars in their final round game in Brisbane on Tuesday night looking for their first win of the season.

Despite trailing by nine goals in the third quarter, the Panthers rallied and pushed the Jaguars until the end before recording a 52-51 loss in what was a tough result for the young Darling Downs squad.

The rousing Panthers comeback fell just short of a maiden victory leaving Darling Downs coach Rebecca Stower proud of the performance, yet deflated by the result.

“We were so devastated. We definitely deserved the win,” Stower said. “It was such a shame.

“I think it was a bit bitter-sweet. They felt good they played well. They were proud of what they did out there but we’re just devastated because they were the better team.”

Stower paid tribute to the determination of her players in coming back from nine goals down in the third quarter after such a tough season, which involved plenty of games in Brisbane on Tuesday nights around work and study commitments.

“It just showed their true character as individuals and as a team,” she said.

Stower thought her players had made big improvements during the season and hoped to see them return next season.

“If we could just retain them we will have a competitive team,” she said.

Stower will now prepare to coach the City team in the upcoming City versus Country representative series for teams in the State League division two competitions.
