Senior representative stars show talent here

-

MOMENTUM is certainly building. You can see it happening on the field.

The Western Mustangs got the year off to a good start when it came to furthering the push to earn a spot in the Intrust Super Cup.

The colts made the state-wide U20s Cup semi-finals while the under 18s went even better as they took out the Mal Meninga Cup in what was a great achievement.

Now the older players from across the region are joining in showing the quality out here.

Four players - Jason Wardrop, Steve Franciscus, Corey Blades and Matt Duggan - were part of the victorious Central Division team that took out the QRL Divisional Championships on the Gold Coast last weekend.

On top of that, Central coach Eugene Seddon is also a Toowoomba talent who is enjoying an outstanding year as he was also coach of the Meninga Cup-winning Mustangs under 18s squad.

Wardrop, Franciscus and Duggan have now been picked in the Queensland Rangers team confirming they are elite club players and capable of competing at a higher level.

There were also three representatives from the region to make the Rangers team last year in a sign players of that quality regularly find a home in the TRL.

Throw in that former Toowoomba Clydesdales under 20s captain Haydan Lipp was also picked in the Rangers squad this year and that is a strong showing for the region in a state team picked from the best players plying their trade at the level below the Intrust Super Cup.

That shows there is already talent here that could go towards putting a competitive Mustangs team together to contest the ISC.

Any possible state league team would have to recruit heavily but leading players from the TRL would be in with a chance of making the round one team and would provide sufficient depth. Momentum is building. Hopefully that rolls on to help Mustangs officials secure the financial backing needed for the region to return to the state league arena.
