AN AVID cyclist is concerned part of the Toowoomba Range is an accident waiting to happen.

Richard Watson cycles the range, along the Warrego Hwy, weekly and noticed his riding path had been reduced and parts had become rough between Tabletop Dr and the Saddle.

Roadworks are being undertaken to renew the surface of the road to remove bumpy and old sections and provide a smoother surface.

Mr Watson said the trouble was although part of the original surface had been profiled out there was still a narrow part of the road that had a very rough surface.

“In some places close to the Saddle profiling seems to have removed the existing surface entirely,” he said.

“This is potentially very dangerous. An accident involving a cyclist due to this poor surface could be fatal.

“If a cyclist hits a rough patch of road and accidentally veers into traffic, it could definitely be fatal.”

Mr Watson contacted Toowoomba Main Roads and said he was pleased they responded so quickly, addressing his concerns.

A Transport and Main Roads spokesman told The Chronicle that road users were urged to exercise caution when travelling in the area.

“We are rehabilitating sections of the Warrego Highway in the eastbound and westbound lanes through Withcott and on the Toowoomba Range, below the saddle,” she said.

“These works will remove bumpy and old sections of the road to provide a smoother road surface and enhance its longevity.

“All road users are reminded to exercise caution around roadworks and drive to the changed traffic conditions.”

The works are expected to be finished by Friday, June 23, weather permitting.
