Anniversary celebrations for church

-

AS THE community for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints came together to celebrate the church’s 60th anniversary, president Aaron Thayer paid tribute to all who sacrificed time and effort to build the church.

He told all to take the time to remember: “Stop regularly, stop and remember, all the sermons, the talks, the tears shed and reflect long enough to be grateful and to change our lives for the better”.

About 120 people attended the celebrations at the church on June 3 and were treated to an “extravaganza” of musical items.

Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Toowoomba, Ipswich and Warwick regions director of public affairs Evelyn Ray said the highlight was Andrew Doecke on the Charles Dirksen organ.

“He was the master working his mighty magic with his whole being,” she said.

“It was magnificent to both watch and listen to. It was a real treat for us all.

“Andrew’s humour, as he introduced each segment, lightened everyone’s spirit, as he told stories from days gone by.”

Ms Ray said Victoria Edwards sang a beautiful piece about the Saviour, which brought a special spirit into the chapel, Jonathan Verwimp and Aaron Thayer had “everyone in tears” as they sang a heart-warming rendition of The Holy City, and Peter Hugo shared his talents on the organ, the piano and the harp.

She said the anniversary celebrations were very successful.

“Apart from the musical treat, it was lovely to watch as friends rekindled friendships, people mingled and enjoyed each other’s company over afternoon tea provided by the ladies of the church, which we are very thankful for,” Ms Ray reported.
