Value of honour

- — Ps Lloyd Gill, Grace Community Church

“KNOW (see, value) those who labour among you.” (1 Thessalonians 5:12) This short excerpt from the Bible speaks of a principle that is found throughout the Bible, the idea of honour is at the heart of all that God is about, even in the relationship of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit they live to honour each other.

This is a principle that touches on everything in our life whether we know it or not, we can never expect to receive much from that which we despise or devalue, and we are much more likely to receive from that which we honour or value. If a child deeply values education he will receive a lot more out of it than someone who does not understand the value of learning.

The difficulty of course is that often we do not think we are despising something when we are. We will say things like she is a good wife, but I wish ...... While it is not invalid to communicate with our spouses about our desires, this kind of comment can be quite dishonouring to our spouse, and the place that comes from is we can get so caught up in looking at what we think other people have that we fail to see and honour what is right in front of us.

Proverbs says with good reason that a man should “rejoice in the wife of your youth” (5:18) focusing and honouring what you do have will increase its value, and will also unlock blessing that will not come any other way.

Yes, there can be other issues in anything but if honour is missing, there is little chance that anything will be much of a blessing.
