It’s time for action on drug use

- REPORTER MEGAN MASTERS megan.masters@thechronicle.com.au

OUR country’s growing drug problem is becoming harder to ignore and Toowoomba is far from immune.

Syringes in city parks, car parks and walking areas are becoming more of a common sight than ever, testament to not only the growing problem of illegal drug use, but the increase in people choosing to inject their drug of choice.

I absolutely cannot imagine what would make a person hunt for a dingy, dark car park before preparing and injecting a drug, but clearly people have their reasons.

It’s such an alien thought to most of us and therefore no surprise that solutions to the issue are hard to come by.

Sure, police could start patrolling the area regularly for a while and either scare off the miscreants or incarcerate them, but it’s hardly what you would call a solution.

Chances are the drug takers would land themselves in the court system, wind up with a fine and a direction to attend drug diversion before getting straight back into the cycle of addiction.

There is a lot more to the scourge of drug addiction than simple bad choices, so it would be wonderful to see some constructive action with long-lasting effects.

Drugs cost our community its health, safety and reputation as a family-friendly city, so surely it’s time we heard some solid ideas.

BIBLE THOUGHT

“AND let us consider one another to provoke to love and to good works: Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as you see the day approaching.” (Hebrews 10:24-25 AKJV) God’s people should be in church with God’s people. This is His plan. Be in church this Sunday.
