Mural goes with the grain
Queensland’s first silo to be painted in Thallon
THALLON, near St George in south-west Queensland, will be the first silo in the Sunshine State to have a massive mural painted on it.
The mural on the Thallon silo, located in the Balonne Shire, will be created by two of Queensland’s most prolific street artists, Travis Vinson and Joel Fergie.
The concept, developed in co-operation with the local community, titled The Watering Hole, will depict a dramatic view of life on the land.
Thallon is a six-hour drive from Brisbane and is home to the 300,000-tonne GrainCorp grain receival site where the silos are located.
Painting the 30m x 40m canvas will start on June 29 and take about three weeks.
Subject to weather conditions, it is expected to be revealed on July 20.
The project has been in the works for more than two years, led by the Thallon Progress Association project manager Leanne Brosnan.
“It’s so exciting to see this amazing project finally become a reality,” she said.
“Local residents have contributed ideas and photographs to be used in the design.
“The community also contributed financial support through donations via a GoFundMe Campaign.
“This project has been a community effort and includes funding contributions from the Balonne Shire Council, Arts Queensland, GrainCorp, Taubmans, Rural Affinity Insurance and the Royal Flying Doctor Service – Drought and Wellbeing Program.
“The whole community should be so proud of the project.
“As we have seen in Victoria, massive silo art has the power to transform a
community and the broader region.”
GrainCorp’s Queensland regional manager, Brad Fosters, said GrainCorp had been part of the Thallon community for more than 70 years.
“So when we were asked to
contribute the canvas for the art project we were so excited to see what could be done,” he said.
“We are delighted to be able to contribute to a visually inspiring and important community initiative, which will attract more visitors to
this wonderful part of Queensland.”
Balonne Shire Mayor Richard Marsh said council was happy to support the project as the artwork would be a drawcard for tourists to the area.
“I congratulate the
organising committee on bringing this project to fruition and look forward to seeing the finished result.”
