Floral fanfare at camellia show launch

IF WE’RE going to call ourselves the Garden City, there has to be more to gardens than springtime.

Toowoomba’s premier winter gardening event is doing its bit to maintain our year-round floral image and yesterday supporters gathered to officially launch this year’s event.

The Toowoomba Camellia Show and Garden Expo is coming up on July 15 and 16, so it was with plenty of floral fanfare that the event was launched under the windmills at the the TAFE Horticultural Centre precinct.

Organising committee member Greg Johnson was in his floral finest for the launch, which was celebrated by cutting a beautiful camellia garland, deemed more suitable for the occasion than a ribbon.

He thanked sponsors and media partners before handing over to committee president Ken Cotterell.

“Toowoomba is internationally renowned as the Garden City,” Mr Cotterell said.

“Our event has grown in stature as a result of that reputation to the point that, for the first time, we have coaches coming from near and far bringing garden lovers to enjoy all that a beautiful Toowoomba winter’s weekend has to offer.”

Toowoomba Hospice was the chosen charity for the event, so hospice chairman Graham Barron stepped up to thank the community for its support.

The camellia show will also feature the naming of this year’s Toowoomba Winter Garden and the Queensland launch of a new camellia.
