Quick and easy bathroom updates

It doesn’t take a tradesman’s licence and a vast amount of money to create a modern look

GONE are the days where the only solution to update a bathroom was to engage with trade professionals to rip it out and start again.

Consumers in general are more savvy about cost-effective renovations due to a combination of websites like Pinterest, numerous renovation shows on television and the endless new products available in today’s market.

With a little research, inspiration and the desire to take on a project that will add value to your property, anyone with the right information and tool kit is equipped to take on a bathroom update.

The first step is to decide whether your project is worthy of a quick update. If you plan to rip out the bathroom in the near future it may not be worth spending the money at this stage.

However, if a major bathroom reno is a while off, a quick and cost-effective update in the interim is a great way to freshen the look of your home.

In my family home, the second bathroom had this crazy Mexican-inspired theme, which back in 1998 would have been absolutely divine. Not so much now. My fiance and I don’t plan to renovate the bathroom for as long we can put it off, so an aesthetic update was a viable decision.

In my opinion, painting your bathroom has the ability to transform the space on the largest scale. Tile and laminate paint has come a long way in recent years, and I have had great success with these products.

By doing your research and sourcing the right products, you can basically paint anything from floor tiles to wall tiles, benchtops and laminate cabinetry.

Without any structural changes and just a splash of colour, you’ve recreated your space into the style you desire using affordable products that hold up well to the wear and tear of a high traffic area.

With a Hamptons, country chic vibe in mind, I painted our entire bathroom from floor to ceiling in a colourway of grey and white. While this might sound a little monotonous, the importance of a neutral palette was based around keeping a timeless look.

Installing new crystal knobs on the freshly painted cabinetry and feather-inspired hooks for towels provided a cohesive look for my new space.

Tying the room together are theme-consistent homewares, a traditional rattan bathroom chair, a grey vase with country florals and a tea box which stores the kids’ electric toothbrushes.

Another simple and easy update I intend to make is install new lighting and tapware. With these aesthetic changes to the space our second bathroom will still be in good condition and on trend for a few years yet, and allow time and finances for other renovation projects in our home.
