Lyon calls for Eagle to be banned over bump

-

AFL: Demons great Garry Lyon says Luke Shuey must be suspended for his hit on Patrick Dangerfield on Thursday night.

The incident occurred late in the first quarter, with the West Coast midfielder choosing to run past the ball and collect Dangerfield with a heavy bump.

Dangerfield was knocked to the ground but played out the match.

The incident is sure to be looked at by the Match Review Panel this weekend.

“There will be an outcry if the AFL deems it appropriate and fair that someone can run past the action and bowl them over and clean up another player,” Lyon said on SEN radio.

“If the AFL want to read the tea leaves on this and take no action on this play, all hell will break loose.”

Meanwhile, Geelong star Joel Selwood has been reported for striking West Coast midfielder Sam Mitchell.

Mitchell reacted angrily after Selwood fell on him with an elbow to the head in the first quarter.

It was initially believed Mitchell was cited after he swung his arm around the Geelong captain’s neck in retaliation and held him in a headlock.

However, the confusion was cleared up in the second half of the game.

After Thursday’s loss Geelong coach Chris Scott said he would be crazy not to dig deeper into his team’s struggles after byes, but he wasn’t overly worried.

West Coast’s 13-point win was the seventh year in a row the Cats have lost the week after their mid-season bye.

“We have had a good look at it,” Scott said.

“But it (the seven straight losses) is actually not true. There was a bye last year before the finals and we won the next week.

“Sometimes these things can grow legs even when they are false.”
