Revisions to the popular Nissan Navara are welcome updates to keep it a solid competitor in the ute segment

-

PROOF is in the pudding, rather than the crust, of Nissan’s new Navara. Series two the model which was first launched in May 2015 with a “softer” and more SUV-like interior, the Japanese carmaker recently updated some variants with firmer suspension in response to buyer feedback.

Revisions to the front and rear shock absorbers along with changes to the back rebound dampers delivers a more stable and confident performance when under load and while towing.

Changes only affect models with five-link coil-spring rear suspension.

Prices have essentially remained the same across the board, with $1000 increases to nine models within the nearly 30-strong derivative line-up.

Nissan Australia managing director and CEO Richard Emery said Navara battles with X-Trail to be the brand’s best-selling model Down Under.

Before this current model was launched Nissan trumpeted its credentials as Australia’s most powerful tradie with a diesel V6, but now it’s exclusively available with a single or dual turbo four-cylinder diesel – and there are no plans for a six-cylinder return.

“It was a major concern early on from our network. Once the car was in market the engine issue has gone away,” he said.

“Is there still some consumers who have a problem with the (engine) size versus the V6? Sure. But in terms of meeting consumer expectations around driveability and efficiency I think we are over that hump now.”

From the outside there are no changes to the Series II Navara. The only alteration is the

removal of the rear NP300 badge – that stood for the global nameplate Nissan Pick-up, but only caused confusion for Aussies who simply knew it as Navara.

Other alterations have seen the sunroof become an option on ST-X rather than standard, while satnav is standard on ST variants. Dual cab RX cab chassis is also available in both automatic and manual.

Another workhorse has been added to the Navara range. Called an SL, it has the twin-turbo diesel, steel wheels and vinyl floor coverings with a manual box.

Drive-away deals available from Armstrong Auto Group, 78 Neil St, Toowoomba.
