Holden extends Astra range even further with all-new Sportwagon
IF you prefer your Astras Euro-built and with room for a bit more junk in the trunk, it may be worth holding out for Holden’s Astra Sportwagon due later this year.
The wagon was designed and engineered alongside its hatch sibling by Opel in Germany and will be built in the UK.
The Sportwagon has the same ride, handling and steering tuning set-up as the hatch, co-developed by the Holden team over multiple European test drives.
Out tests of the Euro-built Astra hatch have been overwhelmingly positive, so we’re in no doubt the wagon version will display similar impressive ride and handling abilities relevant to Australian roads.
Holden says the Sportwagon will use the Astra’s 110kW 1.4-litre turbo petrol engine mated to a six-speed auto transmission.
No word if the hatch’s hotter 147kW 1.6-litre turbo will be available in a wagon version at a later date.
Beyond the wagon style that’s quite in vogue of late, a key benefit is 1600 litres of boot space with the rear seats folded.
Full range, specifications and price haven’t been announced at this early stage, but Holden promises Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity, a hands-free power tailgate and keyless entry/push-button start.
Active safety gear also boosts the family credentials of the wagon, with auto emergency braking, lane-keep assist, forward-collision alert and rear-view camera all promised.
The Astra Sportwagon will be the 13th new vehicle to be launched since Holden’s 2015 commitment to introduce 24 new models by 2020.
