Holden shows equality support with cars

TOOWOOMBA Holden has taken a rainbow-coloured step and showed its support for equality.

It is Holden Australia’s view that companies aren’t logos, or buildings, or car brands.

Companies are made of people and the people who make up Holden come from all walks of life. That is why diversity is so important.

This year Holden was the official Mardi Car at the Mardi Gras Parade.

A Colorado was painted colours of the rainbow to support equality.

Holden is the first car company in Australia to publicly support marriage equality and the Toowoomba branch is also showing its support.

Residents may have seen two rainbow-coloured cars driving around town recently and wondered at the meaning behind them.

A Colorado and Cascada have been painted purple, blue, green, yellow, orange and red, with “Holden. Supporting equality” on the side.

Holden’s executive director of human resources Ashley Winnett said the company’s commitment to equality went much deeper than the rainbow car wrap.

“In the last year we’ve made some huge steps in the equality and diversity space and not just in our support of LGBTI campaigns,” she said.

“We’ve also introduced a paid leave policy for employees impacted by family and domestic violence and we’ve extended paid maternity leave to give men paternity leave at the rate as women.”

The cars have been spotted all around town with people stopping to get photos.

Toowoomba Holden shared the news on its Facebook page and received hundreds of likes. Many people commented.

Maryika Welter said: “I saw the car today and it put a smile on my face.”

Angela Mary said: “I saw these yesterday and would definitely trade my car in for one.”

Jack Duffy said: “Amazing. Thanks Toowoomba Holden. My heart is full.”
