Door always open for inland rail communities
MEMBER for Groom John McVeigh is continuing to meet with potentially affected communities across the Darling Downs ahead of an announcement of the inland rail corridor.
There are currently four potential corridors across the Darling Downs being considered by federal infrastructure and transport minister Darren Chester and a decision is expected shortly.
“People are vitally interested,” Dr McVeigh said.
“I have been meeting with communities on all four potential corridors given that despite communication and media over recent months, some residents are still unaware the corridors are being reviewed,” he said.
“The first point I make at all these meetings is that Melbourne to Brisbane Inland rail is coming.
“After decades of talk the Turnbull Government is committed to building the line.”
“The Minister has given me a commitment he will continue to study the
Darling Downs before a decision is made,” Mr McVeigh said.
“I have been in talks with his office every few days since the review began…I want to make sure the route chosen has the least impact possible on our communities.”
Dr McVeigh most recently met with residents from Clifton, Nobby, Greenmount and
Cambooya, together with Cr Megan O’Hara Sullivan in his office to discuss the situation.
“I stressed that no decision has been made on the preferred corridor let alone a specific eventual route through the region.
“We also dispelled a number of the rumours that are circulating through these communities.”
State Member for
Condamine Pat Weir has also been fielding questions from the community on the project and received an update at FarmFest.
“I have been in regular contact with John on this issue and we took an opportunity to talk through the concerns of the residents in the Greenmount area following his meeting on Monday night,” Mr Weir said.
