A study into the benefits of various social activities conducted by Chicago’s Rush University Medical Centre and published in the Journal of Gerontolog­y: Medical Sciences has shown there are many health benefits to a good old game of bingo. In fact, of all the activities studied, bingo was one of the most beneficial as it involves being with other people as well as keeping alert monitoring numbers being called out to see if they won a prize.

The researcher­s studied 1,000 adults and investigat­ed how much help subjects needed looking after themselves as they entered their 80s. It found that those people who were most sociable were less likely to need assistance with things such as getting dressed or going up stairs. Another study conducted by the Psychology Department at the University of Southampto­n found playing bingo regularly can sharpen your mental faculties. When you play bingo, you are required to stay alert which makes your mind more agile. Prolonged playing of bingo simply increases the power of your brain – much like training for a marathon. The British Medical Associatio­n has said games like bingo can even help patients heal quickly and help lower the levels of depression following a serious illness.
