Sold For Song looking to end on G1 note

RACING:

It’s been a long time between drinks but the Queensland Winter Carnival party is not over quite yet for Toowoomba mare Sold For Song.

The four-year-old’s latest win came 12 months ago to the day and tomorrow Sold For Song is out to celebrate that anniversary in style when she tackles the $500,000 Tattersall’s Tiara (1350m) at Eagle Farm.

The race is the final Group One event on Australia’s 2016-17 racing calendar.

Sold For Song hasn’t saluted since arriving with a barn-storming finish for jockey Jimmy Orman to win the Listed Daybreak Lover (1400m) at Eagle Farm on last year’s Tatt’s race day.

But despite remaining win-less since, Sold For Song has lost few admirers with a string of spirited and at times luckless performances in Black Type races across three states.

She maintained that stoic form at her latest appearance with a late-closing fourth behind Prompt Response in the Group 2 Dane Ripper (1350m) at Doomben two

weeks ago.

Trainer Kevin Kemp is already looking beyond winter with Sold For Song with longer southern spring carnival races in mind for the Collate mare, but is still expecting another trademark performance from her tomorrow.

“She just wants to be a race horse,” Kemp said yesterday.

“She loves what she does and that shows in the way she races.

“She races at the top level all the time, having to come mostly from wide barriers, and we’re looking forward to the chance of eventually getting her out to 1600 metres which should suit her ideally.

“But I’m sure she’ll run another honest race on

Saturday.

“She’s got a beautiful barrier (five) and I think the pace will be on so we are just hoping now for some luck.

“She’ll have four or five weeks off after Saturday ahead of the spring.”

Sold For Song is an early $16 chance behind Stradbroke runner-up In Her Time ($3.20).
