Downs’ coach maintains link to Heelers

RUGBY UNION: Darling Downs rugby coach Rob Johnston will add new meaning to the phrase “keeping it in the family” when he guides the Queensland Country Heelers through their 2017 campaign.

Johnston takes over as head coach of the Heelers this year for a three-match program after working as an assistant last year to Garrick Morgan and Brett Johnstone.

But while Johnston finds himself in new surrounds with the Heelers next week, his family name is no stranger to Queensland Country rep football.

Johnston’s elevation to head coach maintains a strong family link with the Heelers.

His father Leigh and brother Andrew are former Queensland Country players while his uncle David Thompson is a past team player and coach.

Johnston’s decorated emergence through the coach ranks has been swift.

After help rejuvenate Darling Downs rep rugby during four years in charge, Johnston found himself earmarked by Queensland Rugby officials for higher honours.

But while the rewards are on show for Johnston’s coaching style and success, following in family footsteps was never an ambition.

“I grew up listening to dad talk about his playing days,” Johnston said this week.

“I remember watching my brother Andrew playing for country and being at games when my uncle coached.

“But trying to get to this level myself is something I never aspired to.

“I just set out to do some coaching, and I enjoyed it.

“I’ve been lucky to be given opportunities and I’ve been happy to take them.

“Dad will spend some time with me and the team in Brisbane and it will be a proud moment for me leading the team into camp for the first time.”
