Cougars defence leads way in win

AUSTRALIAN RULES: University bounced back from its first loss of the AFL Darling Downs division one season in emphatic fashion.

The Cougars not only beat Goondiwind­i by 93 points but kept the Hawks to a solitary goal at USQ on Saturday.

Mark Henning led the University defence as the Cougars ran out 15.15 (105) to 1.2 (8) victors to consolidat­e top spot on the ladder.

The Cougars kicked seven goals in the opening term and held the Hawks scoreless before going on with the job.

It was a different story at Lyle Vidler Oval as goals flowed in South Burnett’s win over Toowoomba Tigers.

Jordan Pressnell kicked an impressive nine goals as the Saints ran out 32.23 (215) to 4.10 (35) victors to make it six-straight wins for South Burnett.

Coolaroo also stayed entrenched in second on the ladder with a 16.11 (107) to 12.6 (78) win over South Toowoomba at Heritage Oval on Friday night.

Tom Claydon and Adam Green each slotted four goals as the ’Roos ran away with the victory with late goals.

Meanwhile, Emily Hewitt and Jayde Struhs kicked big hauls of goals as Toowoomba Tigers downed South Burnett 26.22 (178) to 0.1 (1) in the AFLDD women’s competitio­n.

Hewitt slotted 10 and Struhs nine as the Tigers remain unbeaten, while Dalby moved into second spot with a win over South Toowoomba.
