Children get hands-on with robots at museum
THE highlight of the Cobb and Co Museum’s July school holiday program has been seeing how to program robots during the Under Construction live shows.
One the show is finished, the children have the opportunity to control the robots themselves.
Exhibitions and programs manager Janelle Insley said through coding and basic programing children could tell the robots exactly what to do, so it was not only fun but a taste of what was to come in the future.
Ms Insley said the museum ensured there was a “strong education component mixed in with the fun” of its holiday programs.
“The Under Construction school holiday program is an opportunity for children to really engage in a hands-on and interactive activity and have fun in the process while learning,” she said.
The program is for children aged between three to 12 years and is running weekdays until July 7 and children are able to make their own creations out of various construction materials including LEGO bricks.
Under Construction costs $10 per child and includes an activity book, entry to one live show at 10am, 11.30am or 1pm.
But for those children who are little older, the Teen Workshops, designed for 13 to 17-year-olds had been a real hit with teenagers.
Ms Insley said young people had the opportunity to experience the “absolute thrill” of creating something beautiful from raw materials with their own hands.
The young blacksmiths this week learned from expert blacksmith Terry Drennan and each participant got to take home a metal candle cup they
made themselves.
Other workshops on include glass bead art and millinery.
“We aim to provide activities that are fun and a break from the norm, it is school holidays after all, but
that also incorporate opportunities to learn and be inspired outside the formal school setting,” Ms Insley said.
