TOOWOOMBA residents may have noticed how different the northern end of Ruthven St looks, with the $2.9 million upgrade complete.

The Ruthven St streetscape project includes a boulevard of trees, additional centre median parking, landscaping, upgraded footpaths and public art.

It was once labelled by Deputy Mayor Carol Taylor the “shabby end of town”, and the Toowoomba Regional Council decided to embark on a beautification project aimed at luring customers to the northern end of the CBD.

Toowoomba Regional Council Mayor Paul Antonio said the specially-designed decorative metal trees would become a focal point for northern Ruthven St.

“The eye-catching design fits in with our Garden City image and will provide an iconic entrance to the CBD and an attraction in its own right for visitors,” he said.

Now the project is finished the council is hosting a celebration and invited residents to join them for the grand opening tomorrow from 9am to noon.

The celebrations will be held at Cathro Park, adjacent to Hodgson St.

There will be free coffee and doughnuts from 6am9am, a free barbecue from 7.30am and from 9am there will be an animal farm, face painting, popcorn, fairy floss and radio station giveaways.

Cr Taylor said despite all the changes made to the original plans she was happy the project came in on time.

“It looks amazing and there is a real vibe and sense of excitement,” she said.

“It is the entry way to the CBD from the north and the artwork that has just been installed looks really nice and it signifies the entrance to the CBD.”
