Cash slams ‘rich’ Tomic

- Leo Schlink

TENNIS: Pat Cash is among tennis greats to lash Bernard Tomic after the young Aussie voiced his lack of motivation with the sport following his opening-round exit at Wimbledon.

In an extraordinary interview, Tomic admitted being bored and “mentally not there” after a vapid first-round loss.

Cash, a former winner at the All-England club, said the gifted Aussie has had it too good.

“I don’t want to stick the boot in, but it wasn’t a great day,” Cash told the BBC.

“He needs to go and work in a factory, and do some labour, and see what it’s like to really work out there.

“I mean he’s too rich, too early.”

Tomic faces possible sanctions after admitting the medical time-out he used in his opening round loss to German Mischa Zverev was tactical and not legitimate.

Grand slam supervisors will consider a transcript of Tomic’s extraordinary post-match interview during which he revealed he wasn’t injured when he called for the trainer.

Tomic could be charged with bringing the sport into disrepute and fined.

Tomic said he called for the trainer even though there was nothing wrong with him.

“I just thought I’d try to break a bit of momentum, to use that as my strategy because I was just playing very bad and feeling bad out there,” he said.

“I tried to use something different maybe, you know, slow him down a bit on the serve. He was playing quick and we were all playing quick and he was serving well.”

Tomic pocketed $64,000 in 84 minutes, earning just over $900 for each of the 71 points he won in the straight-sets loss.

Zverev said he was surprised by his opponent’s listless performance.

“He beat me quite easily a few days ago, so I was expecting a very tough match,” Zverev said.

“I don’t know what was wrong with him but I could definitely tell he was not 100 percent.”
