Two winners in the race called life
THERE is so much focus on the drivers of vehicles in motorsports. They are, of course, quality athletes and there is much to admire about their stamina, reaction time and general staying power.
But they are part of a much bigger team, plus they have loving partners who watch them get behind the wheel to do speeds of more than 200kmh.
In this Weekend, Supercars legend Craig Lowndes’ wife, Lara, tells of what it is like for her when her hubby crashes his car.
What I most admired though, during our chat, was her independence and the importance she placed on having her own life.
Yes, her husband is the most successful Aussie Supercars driver in history (Craig’s record of Supercars wins has surpassed even his friend and mentor, the late and great Peter Brock).
Yes, she is justifiably proud of her husband’s achievements and supports him on and off track.
But she is also really busy running her own business and maintaining her own life.
In any partnership there is always a risk one person or the other may lose themselves in the relationship.
Maybe you have experienced this yourself, or watched a friend flounder in their choices. I have certainly made this mistake in the past.
So to hear a woman take much pride in her own life and work, while supporting her husband’s great successes, was inspiring and heartening.
Also in this Weekend, our taste chef Peter Kuruvita puts a fire in our bellies with a spicy beef recipe, and group digital editor Mark Furler experiences a flood of emotion at a museum dedicated to Jewish Holocaust victims of the Second World War.
Enjoy the read, this Weekend.
