Rubbs make lots of memories in garden

NOT many people realise, but looking after a garden is almost like a full-time job, said Haden gardener Noela Rubb.

“We probably spend five or six hours a day working in it,” she said.

“I just love being outside, so I do all of my jobs I have to do indoors and then I spend most of my time outside.

“Weeding and mowing and watering and planting, all takes time.”

Mrs Rubb and her husband Paul have been keen gardeners since they married and have entered The Chronicle Garden Competition for about six years.

Last year, they were named the Country Gardens Grand Champions.

“That was really rewarding to win,” Mrs Rubb said.

“We’d never won Grand Champion and we were absolutely thrilled to be told we won.”

It was particularly rewarding, she said, because they’d created the garden from scratch.

“We’ve made lots of memories here, we’ve watched it grow from a paddock to a garden in the 11 years we’ve lived here.

Both Mr and Mrs Rubb encouraged Toowoomba gardeners to enter their own gardens in the competition.

“The biggest reward is having people come and see your garden.”

Mrs Rubb agreed and said she thought country gardens were much more relaxing than city ones.

“You can come out and relax and sit in a chair and enjoy lunch.”

The Chronicle’s marketing manager Stacey Hixon said she was thrilled with the calibre of this year’s entries.

She thanked competition sponsors Heritage and Toowoomba Regional Council for their support.

Entries close on Monday, July 31 at 4pm and entry forms will appear in the paper once a week until then.
