❝So this seemed like a way to work for myself and do something I like.

— Brett Williams

AFTER a more than 30-year career in the transport industry, Brett Williams decided he wanted a change.

Mr Williams has now joined Hire A Hubby, opening his own franchise in East Toowoomba to offer his services as a professional handyman.

“I wanted to be home more often, but still do something,” Mr Williams said.

“I always liked mucking around the house fixing things.

“So this seemed like a way to work for myself and do something I like.”

Mr Williams is a qualified motor mechanic who worked for the past 33 years in various roles in the transport industry including as a mechanic, truck driver, in operations and managing transport companies.

“Things that set us apart from most handymen is we have police checks and we also offer a workmanship guarantee,” he said.

Mr Williams said his new role was “professional handyman” which he explained was doing home maintenance with everything from fixing holes in walls, to garden work and fixing fences.

“All types of people call us. These days people don’t have time,” he said.

“But also a lot of fathers haven’t passed on the information to their children about how to do these little jobs around the home. So that is a dying art.”

In fact, that is how Mr Williams learnt his skills from his father who is a builder and a plumber, as well as growing up on the land.

“What I like about the job is the actual variety you get to do,” he said.

“I also like that I am home every night now. I can sleep in my own bed for a change instead of a truck.

“I can also catch up with my grand kids and my kids too.”

Mr Williams’ Hire A Hubby franchise is the second for Toowoomba.

Mr Williams will cover the suburbs of East Toowoomba, North Toowoomba, Mt Lofty, Prince Henry Heights and Rangeville.
