PATRICIA Lucas has 10,000 reasons to be happy, after being rewarded for shopping locally.

The Toowoomba resident was named the winner of The Chronicle’s Town Proud promotion and will take home a prize of $10,000.

Each year for the past four years, The Chronicle has run Town Proud, an initiative aimed at encouraging Toowoomba residents to support local businesses while giving customers the chance to win $10,000 cash and the businesses the chance to win advertising packages.

It was simple to enter, shoppers bought a copy of The Chronicle to find out what businesses were participating in the initiative, went in store, purchased something for $5 and handed in their entry form.

Ms Lucas had six entries after shopping at Drug Arm in South Toowoomba.

“When I received the call I didn’t know if it was for real or not, I was so surprised,” she said.

“I feel happy, grateful and blessed to have won.”

Ms Lucas is a deserving winner, only ever shopping locally.

“I have the same shopping route which I follow, visiting the same shops every time I go out always supporting local stores,” she said.

“I especially love the Drug Arm because they

have the best knick-knacks, that’s why I ended up having so many entries from the store.”

The Chronicle marketing manager Stacey Hixon said she was happy the initiative could promote small businesses.

“It is wonderful that a dedicated local shopper won the prize and we could support Toowoomba businesses in the process,” she said.

Ms Lucas plans to use the money to publish a novel about her life.
