No fan of amateur Trump

- SWANNELL PETER SWANNELL

I WASN’T going to write this; I had written a soppy thing about learning of the death of King George VI and breaking my leg.

These were two quite unrelated events and didn’t justify the use of my customary 625 words, no matter how much I fiddled about with the truth. So . . I’ve decided to turn to richer pastures.

I’ve only once ever dared to write about Donald Trump, back in December 2015. It was about a year before that when I last stirred the Hanson pot. So I’ve figured it must surely again be time to risk re-offending a few of my valued readers.

You might have gathered that I am not a particular fan of either of these opinionated heroes. Their rise to positions of leadership is scary in the extreme.

Even as I write this (Sunday pm), the admirable Chris Uhlmann, the ABC Political Editor, writes of Trump’s latest rant; (quote) “The G20 became the G19 as it ended. On the Paris climate accords the United States was left isolated and friendless. It is, apparently, where this US President wants to be as he seeks to turn his nation inward ......... He is a character drawn from America’s Wild West, a travelling medicine showman selling moonshine remedies that will kill the patient.”

And Pauline Hanson; thank God her influence is somewhat more limited, yet no less unbelievably ignorant. Sorry if you think she speaks with insight; I don’t share that view. Donald Trump, anagram “Damp Lord Nut” and Pauline Hanson, anagram “Punish Anal One” both scare the hell out of me.

That is especially true of Trump. I could learn to cope with Senator Hanson at least in the short term if I really have to but I regard Trump as utterly misplaced, tactically, technically and politically.

Someone must at least make it clear to him that his daughter is not an elected leader of opinion. She has no role and no right to be seen close up with daddy in virtually every photo-shot.

Donald is himself the fourth of the five children of New Yorkers Fred and Mary Trump and the father of umpteen kids. This does not necessarily qualify the rellies to hold high office.

Someone must also tell him there are acceptable ways for a president to conduct himself and acceptable ways of expressing himself on issues of world interest. Things that can be said around the family fireplace are sometimes different from what can be said publicly or formally. That is neither dishonest nor duplicitous.

There are conventions about how leaders talk together and some things are best left unsaid, at least in public. If these conventions are flaunted then there are consequences for all parties. I wish Donald Trump would realise this before real damage is done. Time to achieve this is fast running out.

Meanwhile he comes across as a complete amateur with very little understanding about the real issues or how to deal with them. I get the horrible feeling that his international opponents smack their lips at the thought of engaging with this man on any issue of consequence.

“Is this really the president of the most powerful nation in the world?”

“Is it one of his daughters we are listening to or are they playing games with us just to see whether we are as dumb as they are?”

I am certain all our political leaders do and say daft things from time to time. I am equally certain that most of them think of consequences before they speak. If you choose to compete for high office then you try to rule out certain freedoms of speech that will get you and your country into trouble.

The US and Donald Trump are heading for trouble.
