TSBE National Energy Summit to debate energy production trilemma

-

ENERGY supply and use in Australia is continually changing.

With differing policies across the state and federal governments, the National Energy Summit is being held to debate the trilemma being faced around energy production that is reliable, affordable and sustainable.

Toowoomba and Surat Basin Enterprise executive chairman Shane Charles said the National Energy Summit would address issues in relation to policy development and chart a roadmap for a sustainable energy future for Australia.

“What is clear is that the energy debate in the country is convoluted, difficult and has traditionally dealt with populist short-term solutions rather than long-term structural change,” Mr Charles said.

“The state and federal governments have differing policies on energy and we feel it’s important to have them in the room so we can truly understand their positions,” he said.

Minister for Resources and Northern Australia, Queensland Senator Matthew Canavan said the region was an energy hub, with a range of projects from coal-fired power stations, to gas and renewables.

“All of these are important to power our economy and create jobs,” Senator Canavan said.

“We are technology neutral,” he said.

“There’s a role for any type of power generation that can keep our economy moving and lower emissions.”

Mr Charles said there was no doubt the Surat Basin was the strongest energy region in Australia.

“It may seem strange but because of coal and gas development in the region, we have become a hub for renewables including wind and solar,” he said.

“It is about 25% cheaper to connect to the electricity grid in the Surat Basin because of the extensive

electricity network we have as a result of the 10 gas and coal fired power stations in the region.”

The summit is also a chance to highlight the good

work being done in the Surat Basin, and show how the region can be an example for the rest of Australia.

The two-day event features presentations by

industry experts and political leaders who will assist delegates to position themselves to capitalise on the emerging trends and opportunities in the sector.
