Club donates beautiful quilts

Helping hand to HomeCare clients

-

THE colder winter months in Toowoomba can impact the elderly and venerable members of the community. However a local group of volunteers is combating the winter blues by donating a range of handmade quilts.

The Craft Nest Sewing Club from Crows Nest has created some beautiful, handmade, warm quilts which were donated to the RSL Care Toowoomba HomeCare clients following a special morning tea in Harristown.

Toowoomba HomeCare Manager Glenys Hannemann said her clients were delighted to receive the beautiful donations.

“Some of our clients can be very isolated socially and geographically. These types of gestures from within the community mean the world to them,” she said.

“We have one lady who teared up when she received a special quilt sewn specifically for her with farm animals on it, she was so overwhelmed I know that it will take pride of place on her bed.”

The morning of donations created a special excuse to gather the HomeCare clients and give them a rare opportunity to catch up over morning tea together.

Jan Scudmore from the Craft Nest Sewing Club was so pleased the donations were well received.

“The sewing club started back in 1997 following a severe drought.

“The rural woman in the area wanted an opportunity to meet, socialise and learn new skills. By the end of the year we had 21 ladies coming together regularly learning how to sew and patchwork,” she said.

“Today we have 45 members and we have proudly donated thousands of items to support local organisations and charities. The smiles on their faces today absolutely keep us going,” she said.
