Crackup Sisters celebrate QRRRWN storyteller award
THE Crackup Sisters’ unique approach to storytelling has brought laughter and a sense of fun to all sorts of people – young and old, male and female in country Australia.
Amanda-Lyn Pearson and Alyssa Venning drew on their own experiences of country life and created Twiggs and ST Ruth, who gather stories from rural towns and retell them through comedy, knockabout acrobatics and whip cracking.
They promote women getting in and having a go, women whose special efforts, amazing feats and occasional failings reflect the realities of life for women in rural and regional Australia.
Their work was recognised by the Queensland Rural Regional and Remote Women’s Network, which awarded them the 2016 Story Teller of the Year Award at the QRRRWN Strong Women Awards.
Crackup Twiggs (aka Alyssa Venning) said it was good to be acknowledged for the heard work they put in.
“It gives us the inspiration to keep going, come up with bigger and better ideas and spread the word of exceptional women beyond our own circles,” she said.
QRRRWN president Alison Mobbs said she was excited to see who would come forward from this year’s program and awards.
“It might feel scary putting your hand up for an award but our program is structured around opportunities for the participants to build their networks, their skills and their confidence, so by time they reach the end of the program, participants can speak confidently about where their ideas and plans are leading them,” she said.
Nominations close on Thursday, July 20. Winners will be announced at the 2017 QRRRWN Conference Gala Dinner on October 20.
