PLANTING A SEED TO READ Rapt in reading books

CHILDREN exposed to books early on tend to become better learners and speakers. Being read to regularly and growing up in homes rich in books means they are more likely to arrive at school with good pre-reading skills.

-

IT IS important to encourage young children to read and carry on using their skills so that later in life they can continue to build their lives socially, culturally, educationally and economically.

The ability to learn about new subjects and find helpful information depends on the skill to read.

A good start

We all know it’s so important to read to our children every day when they are young. But how can you encourage them to keep reading as they get older?

Encourage kids to make reading a regular part of their routine and limiting other activities such as watching TV.

Create enticing reading nooks in your home.

Share books and discuss the story line and ideas.

There are so many choices out there. One of the best ways to know what to read is from recommendations from friends, the library, bookstore or online. Choose a book that:

Has a print size that is easy to read.

Is about a topic that is interesting.

Is from a series/author you read and liked.

Has a front/back cover that looks interesting.

Has relevant pictures if illustrated.

Has a reading level in a good range for you (not too hard, not too easy).

Passes the Five Finger Test.
