Magpies secure trophy

Willowburn has taken out the Toowoomba Football League men’s minor premiership in emphatic style.

A 7-0 win over St Albans on Saturday left them waiting on the result of the Rockville and USQ game before they could begin celebrating.

The 1-1 draw meant that Willowburn claims the silverware with three games to spare, as the Magpies aim to continue their winning streak into the finals.

“It is pretty satisfying to be honest,” Willowburn Nick Rundle said.

“Personally at the end of last year I set my goals and targets and this was number one for me.”

This is Rundle’s second year in charge, though he has previously coached other teams at the club including the reserves.

The team has evolved over the years and the coach has seen the successful introduction of a number of players to build what he thinks one of the best Magpies line-ups in his time at Willowburn.

“I think if we can win the next three games I would say collectively this is the

best team I have seen in my time here,” Rundle said.

“Certainly with the strength and depth we have.

“Zach Taylor who came across from Saints added a bit of strength to the midfield and getting back an old young-head in Brenton Pennells gave us two solid pick-ups that really helped us this year.”

Rundle said while the minor premiership was the club’s number one priority this season, the champagne will remain on ice until they win the grand-final.

As favourites to take out the title, Willowburn are enjoying the expectation around them.

“That’s what we play for,” Rundle said. “Everyone wants to go for the guys in top spot and we have earned that pressure and that target on our backs.”
