Hoons cause havoc in city quiet suburb

IN THE middle of the night Rangeville residents are woken by the sounds of hoons speeding along their street.

Cars circle and do burnouts at the roundabout on the corner of Alderley and Rowbotham Sts.

A resident who lives on the roundabout, who wishes to remain anonymous, said a camera desperately needed to be installed at the roundabout.

She said at least once or twice a week she would be woken by the sounds of speeding cars.

“I am a night owl so it usually occurs just after I have gone to bed after midnight,” she said.

“It is a really quiet area with older people and families with children. We don’t need this.”

She said a gang of youths also gathered on the top of the roundabout some nights and “made all the noise under the sun.”

Her call for a camera came after she heard a crash at 2am one night last week. By the time she reached her front door, the car was gone but there were glass and car panels scattered across the road.

The car had hit the footpath so hard it shattered the pavement concrete as well.

“We live on a long straight strip of road which is what hoons look for, they can drive straight along and get up to very fast speeds,” she said.

“The sounds are so loud and it’s so dangerous. Someone could die.

“I don’t have a carport or garage either so if they came tearing up the street and hit my driveway they would smash into my cars.

“A CCTV camera needs to be put in place as soon as possible to catch these people hooning up our street and so police can easily identify who is involved and if there is an accident, which is likely one day, they will know what has happened.”
