Titans boss unwilling to split winning halves

- — Rikki-Lee Arnold

COACH Neil Henry says Kane Elgey is no guarantee of walking back into the Titans’ starting side, with the the battle for the No.6 jersey to come down to form.

Henry named Elgey in his 21-man squad yesterday as the young playmaker races the clock to prove his fitness from a sternum injury before Saturday’s clash with the Panthers.

But even if he does pass the test, Henry says Elgey is no certainty to come straight back into the 17, given the winning combination of Tyrone Roberts and Ash Taylor.

Henry hinted that Elgey could spend some time with Intrust Super Cup wooden-spoon favourites Tweed Heads, with Roberts proving hard to dethrone from five-eighth.

“Certainly going back to Tweed might be something (Elgey) needs to do for some confidence,” Henry said.

“They’re light on in halves at the moment with a number of injuries and he could certainly run the show down there, but we’ll wait and see.

“He’s done some contact (yesterday) and will do a bit (today). He’s there in a 21-man squad, but with a view to play the week after anyway.

“We thought we’d include him and if he gets through, we’ll make some decisions later in the week.”

The Gold Coast is in the hunt to make the top eight, with Taylor and Roberts leading the side to a stunning 30-10 win over Cronulla last week.

Taylor said after the game that he preferred to play with Roberts in the halves because their natural combination could not be coached.

But Henry said it would come down to which of the pair was in the best form as the Titans made their finals charge.
