TARYN and Derek Binstead love making dogs look perfectly groomed or even transforming a pooch into something entirely different.

The local dog groomers, from Creative Canines Grooming, are at the top of their game, taking out multiple awards at the Coffs Pup Cup.

The awards were held at the weekend in Coffs Harbour, New South Wales for the first time.

Dog groomers from across the country and even Singapore put their best styles forward in what Mrs Binstead said was a growing industry.

“A lot is involved with grooming a dog. There is a lot more to it than people might think,” she said.

Mrs Binstead first started competing in grooming competitions in 2012 and said she became “addicted” to it. While she hasn’t competed for a while, her return back was a huge success.

She won the open terrier class as well as the master creative class with her mini poodle. The poodle, Myflair Little White Tiger or “Tigga” was transformed into different Winnie the Pooh characters.

Mr Binstead also took out the novice creative class with his pig dog Muz, transformed into a pink tiger.

Mrs Binstead added there was one other competitor from the Darling Downs at the competition, Year 12 Toowoomba student Eloise Head, 17, who won the novice terrier class.

“These competitions are huge and are a great way for dog groomers and stylists to improve and grow in their industry and educate the public on maintaining the health of their dog they are grooming,” Mrs Binstead said.

Mrs Binstead said she always knew that she would work with dogs from a young age.

“At the time the only job I could find was working in a grooming salon,” she said.

“I just fell in love with it. I love getting a scruffy, dirty dog and making it look fluffy and making the owners look happy.”

Mrs Binstead said the creative side to grooming was a great way for groomers to express their artistic sides.
