Diversity offers opportunities
Melissa Coppi, contracts and leasing manager
Where did you start?
I began working for a company in the motor vehicle industry in 1999.
It provided me with the opportunity to gain some practical skills while completing a double degree at Flinders University (Bachelor of International Business and Bachelor of Accounting).
However, I wasn’t passionate about the industry, technology had not been embraced in the industry at that time, and I wanted to further develop my skills.
Where to next?
In early 2001 I was offered a position in the steel industry.
This opportunity allowed me to develop my skills in accounting as well as gain an understanding of the grassroots of the business.
In late 2002, I transitioned away from accounting – I managed safety, products, pricing and contracts, as well as conducting business performance analysis.
Unfortunately I was made redundant in early 2009 after the steel industry suffered a significant downturn in 2008.
I moved into the wine industry as an analyst, working in business intelligence and analysis.
During my four years in the wine industry, there were a lot of business structural changes and waves of redundancies.
There lacked a stability and it was an uncertain environment, not altogether pleasant, despite the wine allowances.
I was eventually made redundant in late 2013 as my department was relocated to Sydney to be closer to the head offices of the major customers, Woolworths and Coles.
Why move into tourism?
At the beginning of 2014 I was at a crossroads.
I was offered another position in the wine industry, as well as a position at Adelaide Shores (resort).
I was impressed with the calibre of the leadership group and felt aligned with the mission and values of the organisation.
I began as an accountant but have since been promoted to contracts and leasing manager.
I have been given the opportunity to be involved in several projects, and I enjoy that diversity.
Working in the tourism industry has enabled me to extend my personal passion for travel and tourism into my employment.
I am excited for the future growth of the industry.
