A TOOWOOMBA man accused of a violent attack on his partner during a domestic incident at the weekend has been granted bail but with strict conditions.

The 22-year-old spent the night in the custody of the Toowoomba watch house before appearing in the city’s Magistrates Court on a charge of contravening a domestic violence protection order.

Police prosecutor Julia Wheaton said police claimed the man had pushed the woman in the chest before pushing her head down onto table and holding her head down.

He had then punched the woman in the head and forcibly took her mobile phone from her, threatening to kill her if she called police, Senior Constable Wheaton said.

The man had admitted punching the woman, telling police he did so after she punched him in the groin, she said.

The man, who cannot be named due to domestic violence order issues, was not required to enter any plea to the charge and sat quietly in the court dock while duty lawyer Nathan Bouchier applied for bail on his behalf.

Mr Bouchier said his client had no previous breaches of domestic violence orders nor had he any previous offences of violence.

While his client had made certain admissions to police, he didn’t accept some of the police allegations, he said.

His client could reside with his mother away from the complainant woman with whom he had a three-month old child.

Magistrate Catherine Pirie granted the accused man bail on condition he have no contact with the woman except by text message to arrange visits with his child, report to police once a week and not attend the woman’s home except to collect his property and then only in the company of a police officer.
