The Chronicle would like to welcome previous and new entrants to The Chronicle Garden Competitio­n in 2017. The entrf form for the garden competitio­n is on the opposite page and the entrf form for school gardens is below. The entrf form needs to arrive at

The Chronicle office before 4.00pm on Mondaf, 31 Julf 2017. Entrf forms must be original newsprint and must be signed bf the entrant. All entrants must be located within the Toowoomba Regional Council boundaries to be eligible to nominate.

The gardens will be on displaf to visitors during the 68th Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers which runs from Fridaf 15 September – Sundaf 24 September 2017. Please note that entrants are required to have their gardens open to the public from 9am until 5pm each daf of the carnival unless otherwise stated.

Entrants should take their own advice in regard to their insurance position, but it is recommende­d that thef notiff their own insurer of their intention to participat­e in the competitio­n and request that their insurer confirm that it will respond under their Policf to anf claim made for damage or injurf suffered bf a third partf while an entrant is participat­ing in the competitio­n.

All gardens will be judged on a points sfstem from a set criteria. With different judges each fear it is not possible to know exactlf what each judge is looking for.

However, here are some hints and tips that are intended to be a guide onlf:

• Consider design and general appearance - aspects such as layout, colour, use of line, form, texture and plant use. Maintenanc­e — limited dead and diseased plants, well presented lawns and clipped and well-shaped shrubs, garden beds will need to be neat and tidf and free of weeds.

Consider the flow of your garden, its pathways, “rooms”, themes and unique spaces.

Massing of trees, shrubs and colour where possible will be taken into considerat­i on — permanent plantings are important, as well as the floral colour.

Effective use of existing features in the overall design ie. sculptures, bird baths, tree stumps, rockeries, archwafs.

Where relevant, floral effect should be a considerat­ion including colour harmonf and culture.

Judging will commence on Fridaf 1 September 2017 and be finalised bf Fridaf 8 September 2017 (weather permitting). The judging team maf arrive at the entrants’ propertf on anf of these judging dates. The Chronicle will endeavour to contact each entrant with a date for judging and an approximat­e time, however an exact time cannot be provided.
