Don’t forget about hair care in winter
IN WINTER, our skin can dehydrate easily due to the colder environment.
Without fail, we pull out the products to combat this.
But TAFE South West Queensland hairdressing teacher Sarah Courtney said hair was always neglected.
She shared her five tips to help keep your hair healthy for the remainder of winter.
1. Use professional hair care products
Ms Courtney said professional products were highly concentrated so there was less stripping of moisture and colour.
“You’ll also save money because you use less product and your colour will also last longer,” she said.
2. Shampoo and conditioner don’t cut it
“You also need to also use a leave in moisturiser,” Ms Courtney said.
“It will be your best friend as it will smooth down the fuzzies with regular use just like using moisturiser.”
3. Have/do regular treatments
Ms Courtney said hair was made of a protein called keratin, and when hair gets damaged, it needed to be replaced (like patching potholes in a road).
“This also helps your colours last longer and hair shinier,” she said.
“So book a salon trip or talk to your hairdresser about home treatments during your next appointment.”
4. We don't always have dandruff when we have a case of the itchies or dry scalp
“Talk to your hairdresser as dry scalps need moisture, not a dandruff specific shampoo that strips both flakes and moistures in some cases,” she said.
5. Use heat protectors
“This will help limit the damage your heat tools do (including your straightener or curling iron), and assist in keeping moisture in the hair,” Ms Courtney said.
“It doesn't replace a leave-in moisturiser, but works together with it to protect the hair.”
