Hard to fathom how big transfer fees have got

- with sports editor Ben Drewe

THERE is no doubt sport at the top level is a business.

Big money is thrown around in order to recruit the best talents in the major competitions across the world.

But at what point does the money changing hands for the services of players become ridiculous?

There are reports Brazilian star Neymar will join Paris Saint Germain from Barcelona on a record transfer deal of a reported $329 million.

I am a sports fan and work in the sports industry, but how can the services of one person be worth that much money?

The only way you could justify a price tag like that is if that one person has the ability to cure cancer, or end world poverty.

Transfer fees in European football have got to the point of absurd.

It is hard to even fathom how much money $329 million is.

I am all for talented people being rewarded for their hard work, skill and dedication, but I just can’t grasp figures the likes of $329 million.

I guess the ones who justify prices like that are the fans; the ones worldwide who fork out inflated prices for the numerous jerseys each club has.

So long as the fans stump up the big dollars it costs to support a sporting club these days, there will be plenty of money in the various sports.

That will allow the players, and the likes of Neymar’s dad who is also his manager, to become richer than any of us will ever comprehend.

I wonder when, and if, we will reach a point where a transfer fee is just too big.
