Head Start on university
High schoolers fast-track education
USQ has celebrated the efforts of highly-motivated high school students who have fast-tracked their university study by completing the Head Start program.
In semester one, 2017, about 90 students from 45 different schools took part in the Head Start Program at a USQ campus, gaining invaluable insight into life after high school.
About 30 of those students attended the USQ Toowoomba Head Start graduation ceremony this week.
For Joseph Goh, a Year 10 student at Toowoomba Anglican College and Preparatory School, Head Start was a way to explore opportunities that university study could provide.
“I enjoyed the program very much, and I really liked how it provided a way for me to experience university whilst still in high school,” Joseph said.
It was also a chance for Joseph to look at potential career paths. He completed two Head Start courses – Foundational Programming and Human Anatomy and Physiology.
“These first year university courses have been really useful in allowing me to explore different interests and figure out what career path I want to take,” he said.
Joseph still has two years of high school study but hasn’t ruled out coming back to USQ during that time to learn more.
USQ’s Head Start program offers high-achieving Year 10, 11 and 12 students the chance to undertake university study while finishing high school.
Students who successfully complete the program are guaranteed entry and academic credit into related degrees provided they have met the program pre-requisites.
