TOOWOOMBA East State School is leading the way when it comes to literacy and numeracy.

This year’s NAPLAN results released earlier this month show the state school is in the top five Toowoomba schools for many of the assessment categories.

NAPLAN is an annual assessment for all students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 and looks at reading, writing, spelling, grammar and numeracy.

The Year 3 students topped reading, spelling and grammar, while the Year 5 students aced spelling and numeracy.

Head of curriculum Dallas Hawley said the school continued to do well each year in NAPLAN and she was proud of the school’s achievements.

She said it was credited to wonderful staff and focused students.

“We have such dedicated staff who know what is important when it comes to education,” she said.

“They focus on continually expanding the children’s knowledge every day.”

“We are very pleased to have rated so highly in NAPLAN; it is a measure against the rest of the nation and we are happy our hard work reflects in the results.”

Year 3 students Abigail Leslight and Ashlynn Austin said they went into their tests hoping to do their very best.

“As a school I feel like we achieved a lot because we did so well in the testing. I wanted to do the best I could and I am really proud of myself and other students,” Ashlynn said.

“At first I felt nervous because I didn’t know if it was as easy as everyone said it was but I felt very confident with my responses,” Abigail said.

Year 5 student Sophie Khan had already participated in NAPLAN when she was in Year 3 so she felt confident she would do well.

“I had done it all before and our teachers had prepared us very well and just encouraged us to do our best,” she said.

Toowoomba Grammar School, Fairholme College, The Glennie School, Agnew School, Mary MacKillop Catholic College and Toowoomba East State School were also stand-outs in Toowoomba.

Ms Hawley said it was great to see so many exceptional schools in the region.

“Toowoomba has such a high level of education. It is great parents have a wide variety of top-notch schools to choose from when it comes to their children’s learning,” she said.
