A “SNOWY-headed” kid who lost his life through sport was the reason a room full of people gathered to raise tens of thousands of dollars for special causes.

The Heads and Hearts Safety in Sports lunch was held yesterday at The Spotted Cow to raise money for The Great White Campaign, the Rural Doctors Association of Queensland and Rotary.

The Great White Campaign, was inspired by boxer Braydon Smith who died from brain injuries in 2015, and is helping to fund neurological services for Toowoomba.

A total of 160 people attended the sold-out event to enjoy lunch and hear from award-winning cartoonist and political commentator Larry Pickering.

“After seven years of search and rescue, I know how difficult it is to get brain-injured people back to where they need to go,” Mr Pickering said.

“You need to have someone who knows what they are doing, that they can go ahead and do it.

“There have been a lot of good Toowoomba people who have already donated.”

Director of the Rural Doctors Association of Queensland Michael Rice was thrilled so many people came together to support such worthy causes.

“The RDAQ Foundation is a charity that was started recently by some of our enthusiastic and far-sighted members,” Dr Rice said.

“The purpose of the foundation is to provide practical support for improve health outcomes for people who live in rural and remote Queensland.”

Organiser Tressa Lindenberg said she was impressed with the people who supported the lunch and said it showed how the community really got behind what was important.
