Up to Aussies to decide the ending

- WITH acting editor Letea Cavander

OUR pollies are currently obsessed with all things love and gay marriage, aren’t they? The demand from the PM that Aussies will have their say, by voluntary postal vote, will cost an estimated $122 million.

Best part is that if Aussies do vote yes to gay marriage (and remember gay people are a minority group historically persecuted) we will end up right back where we are now – pollies will vote on the issue themselves.

Now, romance in the publishing industry is big business, especially in Queensland.

The Sunshine State’s readers are lapping up novels about luuurve in rampant numbers.

So here is a hell of a storyline.

Two people of the same sex are in love, but due to social stigmas, family pressures and some religious fervour from certain quarters they are not sure they can continue their commitment to each other.

They struggle on, alone, but ultimately love wins and they end up back together.

They want to marry, but there is one final hurdle to overcome – an archaic document called the Marriage Act that states marriage can only be between a man and woman.

How will it end?

Well, it seems the Australian public is in the driver’s seat (for the moment) over this choose-your-own ending scenario.

You need to be enrolled correctly to ensure you receive your postal vote.

To the (especially younger) voters out there, I am begging you to update your enrolment details.

Only time will tell how this tale ends, but in the meantime anyone who writes this story might hopefully raise through book sales the $122 million for a plebiscite most don’t want.

Malcolm Turnbull, how are your romantic literary skills? Enjoy the read, in this Weekend.
