A fixer’s a keeper in a woman’s eyes

- with Helen Hawkes

MANPOWER came to cut the trees at the back of my place the other day. Well, okay. It wasn’t quite a pack of male entertainers. But it was some buff, well-mannered contractors with good bone structure and nice teeth.

They turned up in a crew, then proceeded to do manly things like tree chopping and chipping, which impressed the heck out of the female residents no end. Not only were they easy on the eye, they were solving a problem – too little sun, too much mess – and we didn’t have to lift a finger.

Yes, women love men “fixing” things. I’m not talking about tradies who you pay to do a job, although that’s good too. I’m talking about when a man not in your employ makes something work for you, or undertakes physical labour that you may not be capable of, or simply may not want to do yourself, or does one of those nasty jobs that require power tools.

I know feminists can do all these things themselves. I have personally fixed a septic system, buried dead animals, built fences, constructed a letterbox and dug in and trimmed more trees than I can count. But how lovely to have someone do it for you instead. I know they say women like looks, power and money. But men who can DO things, not just operate a TV remote, are very attractive.

I think it must go back to killing the woolly mammoth. Or even building a shelter. Or how about making a tool, or a fire. It’s primal. It’s about being taken care of. And sometimes it’s just about making our life easier. Making things work.

Women are busy. They multi-task. They like things to look good and function, including their men. They really do want you to fix the leaky tap, repair the dog kennel, install the roll-a-door, or build them that new kitchen shelf.

Yes, they could probably do all those things themselves. But if you want to become very attractive, strap on a tool belt and get to it.
